Friday morning was colder and according to the weather reports it was supposed to get even colder. N. C. Gov. Jim Hunt ordered steps to trim state government spending Thursday, saying economic recession threatened the state’s tax collections and budget. U. S. Steel Corp, on Thursday bought a controlling interest in Marathon Oil Co. and took the first step toward creating the nation's 12 largest industrial concern. Mobil Corp, had been fighting U. S. Steel for control of Marathon. President Reagon Thursday retained the draft registration system he once denounced and offered a grace period for signing up more than 800,000 young men who have not complied with the law. Tonight the Columbus Town Council meets at 7 o’clock and the Tryon Council meets at 7:30 p.m. The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Mayor Ken Tucker will talk on "The ^ O * n ° f Tryorl ’ s Acquisition of Lake Lanier." Russell Constance Won’t Run Russell Constance of Tryon had been mentioned by many to be a candidate for Polk County Commissioner. On Friday morning Mr. Constance announced that he would not be a candidate for public office. His statement was follows: "TO ALL MY FELLOW CITIZENS: “During the past few weeks, many Polk Countyites have encouraged me to announce as a candidate for public office. Personal commitments prohibit this opportunity and it is with extreme regreat that I inform you of my decision not to offer for this office. “Never having accumulated a lot of this world’s riches, I give thanks for the greatest gift of all — the friendship and trust of my fellowman. “Thank you so very much. Connie this spring with a Meroney And Rhodes To Head NC 2000 In Polk County Governor Jim Hunt today announced the appointment of Carl P. Meroney and Glenn M. Rhodes as co-chairmen in Polk County for North Carolina 2000. Meroney and Rhodes will join other county NC 2000 chairmen and the Commission on the Future of North Carolina in putting into action a statewide program to set directions for the next two decades in this state. As NC 2000 co-chairmen, Meroney and Rhodes will be putting together a local organization to build awareness among citizens of the emerging issues in North Carolina and to determine what citizens want for their future in this state. Meroney is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy and has been associated with Columbus Pharmacy for the past 20 years. Rhodes is the economic development coordinator for the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission in Rutherfordton. A life-long resident of Polk County, Rhodes is a graduate of Western Carolina University. Meets Tuesday Polk County Schools Title I, District Parent Advisory Council meeting is at 2 p.m. Tues., Jan. 12th at Mill Spring School. All Title I reading parents are invited. State Minimum Wage Goes To $3.10 Workers earning the N. C. state minimum wage received a 20c an hour increase in their wage rate on Jan. 1. N. C. Labor Commissioner John C. Brooks said the state minimum moved from $2.90 to $3.10, and he reminded employers and employees that there will be no increase in the federal minimum wage which remains $3.35 an hour. Brooks noted that the special state sub-minimum wage for full- time students also increased on Jan. 1. The sub-minimum, which had been $2.60, became $2.75.
